Manual therapy is conducted during rehabilitation to maintain or improve joint flexibility, relax contracted and tense muscles and relieve pain.
Methods of manual therapy:
- Stretching and therapeutic massage;
- Passive range of motion (PROM);
- Trigger-point release;
- Scar tissue and fascia release.
Often laser or thermotherapy is used prior to Manual therapies; this is to ensure the muscles are warmed up and relaxed, prior to Massage or stretching. Often after Manual therapies has concluded, the use thermotherapy (Cryotherapy – Cold/ice packs) is indicated especially for reducing acute swelling and edema.
Examples of conditions that may benefit from manual therapy:
- Postoperative healing;
- Orthopaedic diseases;
- Sports injuries and maintenance;
- Arthritis and Ageing.
