Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is used to re-educate muscles that have become atrophied due to injury or disuse.
NMES relaxes muscles spasms and increases both range of motion and blood circulation to the affected areas. NMES uses low-level electrical impulses to stimulate nerves at a low level to block pain and at a different level is used to target muscle.
Examples of Conditions that May Benefit from the use of NMES:
- Muscle disuse atrophy
- Pain control
- Joint and soft tissue swelling
- Tendon and muscle healing
- Muscle spasms
Transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation (TENS) provides a low-level electrical current to disrupt the normal pain perception pathways. Endorphins are released into the blood stream and cerebrospinal fluid to relieve pain and inflammation post-surgically or as an alternative to surgery.
Examples of Conditions that May Benefit from the use of TENS:
- Intervertebral disc disease;
- Muscle spasms;
- Lumbosacral disease; or
- Arthritis.
